ABOUT SOCIETY2

Bitcoin’s launch in 2009 gave birth to a new ecosystem and lens through which we can reconsider the governance of currencies, assets, data and society, using distributed ledger technology (DLT). Six years later the team at IOTA expanded on this vision with a protocol designed to enable the permissionless exchange of value and data, while remaining feeless (removing friction) and bringing scalability through a new architecture (way of organising data and confirming transactions).

Communication, whether social, professional or political, is a critical lubricant in the cogs of society. Social media allows us to communicate, share ideas and express ourselves through online communities. It is crucial that when we want to communicate with others using social media, that no central authority decides whether we can or cannot. Social media profiles and content should be portable, so that if we are unhappy with one platform (or they are unhappy with us), we can easily switch, this should encourage a healthy marketplace of platforms ready to compete for our content or attention.

SOCIETY2 has been inspired by the ecosystems and applications made possible by leveraging DLT and is built on top of IOTA. Our mission at SOCIETY2 is simple, we want to enable choice and control for social media users. We aim to put control of personal data, social media content and communication back into the hands of those who have lost it to internet and social media oligopolies. Using DLT to manage our online identity and store or manage social media content provides us with choice.
